Abstract:

The molecular structure of [(NH3)5Os(pyz)Os(NH3)5]Cl6°2H2O, which crystallizes in space group P21/n, is reported. The short Os-N(pyz) bond length (2.101(7)Å) as compared to the Os-N(ammine) bonds is indicative of strong pi-backbonding. Comparison of the data with the isostructural ruthenium complex shows that pi-backbonding for Ru(III) is weak in comparison to Os(III).
